How to Open a Demat Account in India
A Demat account is your gateway to investing in IPOs, stocks, and mutual funds. Here's everything you need to know to open one in under 15 minutes.
What is a Demat Account?
A Demat (Dematerialised) account holds your shares and securities in electronic form — just like a bank account holds your money. In India, you need a Demat account to apply for IPOs, buy or sell stocks on NSE/BSE, and hold mutual fund units. It is mandatory for all stock market investments. A Demat account is always linked to a Trading account (to place buy/sell orders) and a Bank account (to transfer funds). Most modern brokers open all three together in a single process.

Step-by-Step: How to Open a Demat Account
Follow these 8 steps to open your account online in minutes.
Choose a Depository Participant (Broker)
Select a SEBI-registered broker that acts as a Depository Participant (DP) with CDSL or NSDL. Popular choices include Zerodha, Groww, Upstox, Angel One, and ICICI Direct. Compare brokerage charges, app quality, and IPO application support before choosing.
Tip: For IPO investing, prefer brokers with a clean UPI-based ASBA flow. Zerodha, Groww, and Upstox are popular for their simple IPO application process.
Visit the Broker's Website or App
Go to the broker's official website or download their app from the Play Store or App Store. Click 'Open Demat Account' or 'Sign Up'. Enter your mobile number and verify with an OTP.
Tip: Always open accounts directly from the broker's official website or app — avoid third-party links to prevent phishing.
Enter Your PAN and Basic Details
Provide your PAN number, date of birth, and email address. The system will verify your PAN with the Income Tax database. Fill in your personal details including name, address, and occupation.
Tip: Ensure your name matches exactly as it appears on your PAN card to avoid KYC rejection.
Complete e-KYC with Aadhaar OTP
Most brokers offer instant e-KYC using your Aadhaar-linked mobile number. Enter your Aadhaar number and verify with the OTP sent to your registered mobile. This fetches your address and photo from UIDAI automatically.
Tip: If your mobile number is not linked to Aadhaar, you may need to visit the broker's office for in-person KYC or use a video KYC option.
Link Your Bank Account
Enter your bank account number and IFSC code. Some brokers verify this instantly via penny drop (a ₹1 transfer). Alternatively, upload a cancelled cheque or bank statement. This account will be used for all fund transfers.
Tip: Use a savings account in your own name. Joint accounts or accounts in a different name may cause issues during IPO allotment refunds.
Upload Documents and Sign Digitally
Upload a clear photo of your PAN card and a selfie. Sign on white paper, photograph it, and upload. Some brokers use Aadhaar-based e-Sign (OTP) instead of a physical signature upload.
Tip: Ensure photos are well-lit and all text is clearly readable. Blurry uploads are the most common reason for KYC rejection.
Complete Video KYC (if required)
Some brokers require a short video KYC call where an agent verifies your identity in real time. You will need to show your original PAN card and Aadhaar on camera. This typically takes 5–10 minutes and can be done from your phone.
Tip: Schedule video KYC during business hours (9 AM – 6 PM on weekdays). Keep your original documents ready before starting the call.
Receive Your Demat Account Number (BO ID)
Once your KYC is approved (usually within 24–48 hours), you will receive your Demat account number — also called the Beneficiary Owner ID (BO ID) or Client ID. This 16-digit number is your unique identifier with CDSL or NSDL. You can now apply for IPOs and start investing.
Tip: Save your BO ID, trading login credentials, and UPI ID in a secure place. You will need these every time you apply for an IPO.
